UAM BASEBALL SPLITS WITH MISSOURI S&T

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team split with Missouri S&T on Saturday at home, winning game one 12-6 and losing game two 10-8.

In the first game, UAM (8-2) used a homerun in the each of the first and second innings to get up by a large margin early. Junior Wayne Hawkins hit a two-run shot in the first, and junior Demarcus Rieves smashed a three-run shot in the second. Hawkins added his third and fourth RBI of the game with a two-RBI single in the second.

The Miners (3-1) capitalized on three UAM errors to score five unearned runs in the top of the fifth to trim the UAM lead to 10-6 after five complete innings. The Boll Weevils added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Hawkins, his sixth RBI of the game, and an RBI groundout by sophomore TJ Cox.

Hawkins finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with six RBI and three runs scored.

Senior Reece Cross (3-0) went the distance for UAM, allowing six runs (all unearned) off four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Nick Johnson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for S&T after allowing eight runs off seven hits in only two innings of work.

In the second game, the Boll Weevils scored five runs in the final two innings, but the deficit proved to be too large with the Miners exploding for five runs in the third and four runs in the sixth.

Junior Chase Stokes put UAM on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a solo-homerun to straight-away centerfield, his second round-tripper of the year.

Senior Brandon Miller (2-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Zack Gronek (2-0) held UAM to only three hits in the first five innings, and earned the win after allowing a total of six runs (five earned) off seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Drew Schrader earned a save after retiring the final two UAM batters with the game-winning run on first base.

The two squads meet again on Sunday (2/27) for another double-header starting at noon at Weevils Field.
