WEEVILS, MINERS SWAP SUNDAY WINS

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team and Missouri S&T copied Saturday’s results with another split on Sunday. UAM won game one 9-6, while S&T won game two 4-3.

After the Miners (4-2) scored three runs in the top of the first inning of game one, the Boll Weevils (9-3) responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double by senior Jon Tatum and a two-RBI single by junior Tino Trujillo.

Both squads added a run in the third inning to create a 6-4 lead for UAM. The Boll Weevils extended that lead with a pair of RBI singles by junior Wayne Hawkins and sophomore TJ Cox in the bottom of the fourth.

The Miners took advantage of two fielding errors by UAM shortstop Fernando Garcia to plate their final two runs in the top of the fifth.

UAM added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly out by junior Tanner Laran to score Tatum, who reached base on a wild pitch on a strikeout, stole second and moved to third on a fielding error by the S&T third baseman.

Sophomore Eddie Smith (3-0) earned the win, allowing six runs (one earned) off nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work. Senior Brett Stewart earned his third save of the season, pitching two perfect innings and striking out two batters.

In the second game, S&T starter Chris Bowe had a perfect game through three innings, before junior Chase Stokes reached base in the fourth on a walk and moved to second on a single by Hawkins.

The Miners scored took an early 3-0 lead after two innings with one run in the first and two runs in the third. The Boll Weevils reached the scoreboard in the fifth on a solo homerun to left field by Tatum, his first round-tripper of the season and only homerun of the day.

Tatum struck again in the sixth to create a 3-all tie with a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Stokes and Hawkins, who both singled earlier in the inning.

The Miners scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Ben Pieper to plate Drew Davenport, who reached base on a fielding error by UAM first baseman Taylor Smith.

Stokes (0-1), who started the game as the designated hitter, was saddled with the loss in his first appearance of the season on the mound. He allowed one run, which was unearned, off two hits with one strikeout and one walk in the final 1.2 innings. Drew Schrader (2-0) earned the win for the Miners, allowing no runs and only one hit, while striking out four in the 1.2 innings.

The Boll Weevils return to action next weekend at home against No. 2 Florida Southern. The two squads are set to play a three-game series over the weekend, starting with a single nine-inning game on Friday, March 4 at 2 p.m.
