Stokes, Chase follow through

GREYHOUNDS OUT-SLUG WEEVILS, 14-9

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team lost 14-9 to Indianapolis on Tuesday at home in game that had a 29 combined hits.

The Boll Weevils (9-8) won the hit margin 15-14, but the Greyhounds (7-0) used five multi-run innings to capture the victory, giving UAM its sixth straight loss.

Trailing 6-3 heading the bottom of the fourth, the Boll Weevils rallied to take a one-run lead after posting a four-run inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by junior Chase Stokes.

The Greyhounds regained the lead for the final time two innings later with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, including a solo homerun by Brandon Stevens. Indy added three more runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings for insurance.

UAM was held scoreless from the fifth through the eighth innings, but busted through for two runs in the bottom of the ninth on back-to-back run producing at bats – an RBI double by sophomore TJ Cox and an RBI groundout by freshman Taylor Smith.

The Cox and Smith duo was responsible for UAM’s first runs of the game with an RBI single and an RBI double, respectively, in the bottom of the first.

Smith struck again in the bottom of third win an RBI single. The Monticello native finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.

Stokes and Cox tied for the team-high in hits with three each.

Senior Chris Kirkscey (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. He gave up two hits, struck out one, walked one and hit one batter in his 0.2 innings of work. Indy’s Matt Widick (2-0) earned the win in relief after holding UAM scoreless on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the middle 3.2 innings.

The Boll Weevils are back in action this weekend in Cleveland, Miss. against Delta State to open the Gulf South Conference portion of the schedule. The three-game series is set to open on Saturday, March 19 with a double-header at 3 p.m. at Boo Ferris Field.
