MOCS SLIP PAST WEEVILS IN 10 INNINGS

MONTICELLO – No. 24 Florida Southern scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to slip past the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team by a final score of 3-2 on Friday.

The two squads were scheduled to play a double-header on Friday, but a 90-minute rain delay in the second inning forced the double-header portion of the three-game series to be moved to Saturday at noon.

UAM (9-4) plated its first run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from junior Demarcus Rieves to score sophomore TJ Cox, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

A similar situation in the fifth inning put the Boll Weevils on top 2-0. Junior Fernando Garcia collected an RBI single to left field, scoring freshman Keenan Jumper, who reached on a walk and moved into scoring position on a groundout.

The Mocs (8-5) tied the game in the top of the eighth on back-to-back RBI singles by Tony Mitchell and Jimmy Correnti, and then scored what ended up being the game-winning run in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly out by Austin Chubb to score Mike Snyder from third base. Snyder reached base on an error by UAM third-baseman Demarcus Rieves to lead off the inning.

UAH’s Jake Guengerich (2-0) earned the win, holding the Boll Weevils scoreless with only one hit in the final two innings. UAM junior Chase Stokes (0-2) was saddled with the loss in relief, allowing one run off six hits in the final 2.2 innings.
