WEEVILS DROP MID-WEEK GAME

GRAMBLING, La. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team suffered an 18-7 loss to Grambling State on Wednesday in non-conference action.

The Boll Weevils (12-20) carried over their fielding struggles from this past weekend into Wednesday’s loss to the Tigers (16-14) by committing a season-high six errors that led to five unearned runs in GSU’s favor.

The Tigers took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI triples from the GSU three and four hitters. The Tigers kept their offensive rally going with two runs in the third, four in the fourth and eight in the sixth to give the Tigers a run-rule victory.

UAM was led offensively by junior Wayne Hawkins and senior Richard Atwood, each with a pair of hits in the loss. Hawkins was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run homerun in the top of the fourth. Atwood was 2-for-4 in the loss and also collected two stolen bases.

Freshman Jonathan Wolf also had two hits in the loss, including a solo homerun in the fourth, his first round-tripper of the year.

Senior Chris Kirkscey (0-2) took the loss for UAM after allowing five runs off four hits with two strikeouts and three walks in the first two innings of the contest. GSU starter Joel Deleon (1-2) earned the win after allowing five runs off seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the first six innings.

The two squads were originally scheduled to play two games on Wednesday. The second game was canceled.

UAM returns to Gulf South Conference play this weekend at home against Christian Brothers in a three-game series, starting with a double-header on Saturday (4/16) at noon. Saturday is “Senior Day” for the UAM baseball team. A ceremony to honor the program’s seven seniors will take place at approximately 11:40 a.m. at Weevils Field.
