WEEVILS TAKE TWO FROM MAGICIANS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM baseball team opened the 2012 season with a pair of shutouts of the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians.
 
The Weevils (2-0) jumped on LOC (0-2) with three runs in the first inning to get things started. Danny Loya got UAM on the board first after reaching on a single through the right side. Wayne Hawkins drove him in on the next at-bat with another single. The second run came with a bases-loaded walk that brought in Hawkins. Then, J.D. Deloach hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Josh Chism to score from third.
 
Three more hits in the third plated three more UAM runs as Chism scored again on another bases-loaded walk to Tyler Walker. A sacrifice fly from Christian Gallegos scored the Weevils’ fifth run, plating Hunter Allday, and a Taylor Eaves single to left added the third run of the frame.
 
UAM tacked on two more runs, one in the fourth and another in the fifth, to set the final 8-0 in the first game. Wayne Hawkins got his first homerun of the season on a solo-shot over the right-center fence in the fourth, and Danny Loya drove in the final run in the fifth with a double to center.
 
Chris Guzman (1-0) got the win in five innings of work on the mound. He allowed no runs and no hits in 15 batters faced. Brent Noble and Eddie Smith each got one inning, Noble struck out two and Smith struck out the side to end the game in the seventh.
 
Game two played out much the same as the opener, with the Weevils jumping out to a lead and never looking back.
 
UAM scored two runs in the second with two outs and nobody on off a pair of doubles from Hunter Allday and Paul Parsels. Parsels struck again in the fourth with a leadoff single and scored two batters later thanks to a Gallegos single to right. Taylor Eaves drove him in on the next at-bat with a standing triple to right. He was driven in on the next play as Danny Loya grounded out to the shortstop, to put the Weevils up 5-0 going into the final three innings.
 
UAM cemented the sweep in the sixth inning with three multiple base hits, including a leadoff homer from Taylor Eaves over the left field fence. Loya followed that with a triple to right and Chism added a double to center. Wayne Hawkins had the other hit in the frame, a single to left that drove in Loya from third. The Weevils scored four runs in the inning to finish the day.
 
Kenny Marshall (1-0) took the win in three innings of work, giving up no hits and striking out six in nine batters faced. Russell Watts and Josh Chism came in for a pair of innings each to wrap up the game in six innings.
 
The Weevils will return to action this Friday as they travel over to Magnolia to take on Angelo State University in a 2:00 single game.
