LIONS GET PAST WEEVILS IN OVERTIME

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 97-91 overtime setback against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday night at home.

 

The Lions (4-2) sealed the victory with 17 points and 75 percent shooting in the overtime period.

 

With UAFS up by five points and 4:28 left on the clock in the second half, UAM (3-1) used a 7-1 scoring run capped by a pair of free-throws from junior LA Farmer at the 2:40 mark. The Lions answered with a 5-0 run to re-take the lead at 80-78 with 56 seconds remaining. Farmer sent the contest into overtime on a layup with 12 seconds remaining.

 

Lion guard Kelson Stewart’s potential game-winning shot with nine seconds to go bounced out of bounds to give UAM a final chance with six seconds. Junior Sergio Crowe’s three-pointer at the buzzer was no good.

 

Farmer led all scorers in the game with 29 points on 11-of-22 shooting. He hit 2-of-9 three-pointers and made 5-of-6 foul shots to go along with his seven assists, one blocked shot and one steal.

 

Senior Jerrell Boswell and Crowe followed closely with 17 points each. Boswell hit a season-high five three-pointers. Crowe was 6-of-11 from the field and added a game-high eight rebounds.

 

Junior Ricardo Hall also reached double-digits for UAM with 16 points.

 

Kelson Stewart led UAFS in scoring with 21 points.

 

As a team, UAM finished the contest shooting 47.1 percent from the field, including 50 percent outputs in the first half and the overtime period. The Lions shot 57.6 percent and were above 50 percent in all three periods.

 

The Boll Weevils have a chance at revenge this Friday, December 3, when the team faces the Lions in Fort Smith at the UAFS Classic. Friday’s tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, UAM faces Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m.
