FREE THROWS PUSH WEEVILS PAST TIGERS, 64-59

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team made 6-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes to hold off Ouachita Baptist and capture a 64-59 win Saturday afternoon inside Steelman Field House.

The Boll Weevils (10-6, 2-2 Gulf South Conference) improved their final free-throw percentage almost 16 points following last Saturday’s 54 percent in a three-point loss to Arkansas Tech. UAM finished the win over OBU (6-11, 1-4 GSC) shooting an even 70 percent at the line (21-of-30), including a 71 percent outing in the second half (17-of-24).

Junior LA Farmer had the majority of UAM’s points at the foul line, going 8-of-10 at the stripe to go along with 6-of-14 field goal shooting for a team-high 23 points. The Carrollton, Ga. native nailed 3-of-6 three-pointers to help tally his third consecutive game with at least 20 points.

Juniors Ricardo Hall and Sergio Crowe also reached double-digits for UAM with 14 and 12 points respectively. Crowe added 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double.

The Tigers controlled the first half, leading by as many as 12 points before UAM cut the lead to single-digits with 10:30 remaining in the period. UAM put together a 14-3 scoring run over the next six minutes to cut OBU’s lead to just one point with 3:57 left.

The Tigers took a four-point lead of 27-23 into the locker room following a 5-0 run in the final 1:44.

In the second half, the Tigers started fast again, increasing their lead to as much as nine points before a 7-0 UAM scoring run trimmed the OBU lead to two points with 12:15 remaining in regulation.

Junior D’Angelo Dean’s layup at the 10:01 mark created the game’s second tie at 42-all. UAM captured their second and final lead less than a minute later on a pair of free-throws by Crowe. The Tigers did manage to tie the game on two different occasions in next three minutes.

Scott Day was the only Tiger to reach double-digits, but his 24 points and 13 rebounds were both game-highs.

In addition to UAM’s 70 percent free-throw shooting, the team shot 41 percent from the field (18-of-44) and 35 percent on three-pointers (7-of-20). The Tigers shot 35 percent from the field (23-of-65), 28 percent on three-pointers (9-of-32) and 44 percent at the foul line (4-of-9).

UAM returns to action this upcoming Monday, January 24 in Searcy, Ark. against Harding, a game originally scheduled for this past Thursday. The threat of inclement weather forced the postponement. Monday’s tipoff is set for approximately 7:30 p.m. at Rhodes Field House.
