WEEVILS HOLD OFF MULERIDERS, 65-60

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team held off a second-half rally by Southern Arkansas to capture a 65-60 win over the Muleriders on Thursday night at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

After holding a 10-point lead at halftime, the Boll Weevils (11-7, 3-3 Gulf South Conference) were outscored 35-30 in the second half, despite leading by as much as 14 points on two different occasions in the final 10 minutes. The Muleriders (9-8, 1-4 GSC) scored the first eight points of the second half and trimmed UAM’s lead to one point on two different occasions.

UAM answered with a 17-4 scoring run capped by a three-pointer from senior Jerrell Boswell to bring the team’s lead to 14 points at 59-45 with 9:03 remaining in regulation.

In the first half, the two squads exchanged shots through the first eight minutes with SAU holding the lead until junior Sergio Crowe hit back-to-back three-pointers to give UAM a three-point lead at 13-10 with 11:54 remaining in the half. Including Crowe’s treys, UAM outscored the Muleriders 28-15 throughout the remainder of the half, highlighted by a stretch of 17 unanswered points.

UAM had three scorers reach double-figures, led by junior Ricardo Hall’s 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior LA Farmer and Boswell each had 14 points. Farmer also had eight rebounds, while Boswell nailed his average of three-pointers per game with four.

SAU’s Channin Harden led all scorers with 19 points, and was the only Mulerider to reach double-figures.

The Boll Weevils finished the contest shooting 49 percent from the field (24-of-49), 42 percent on three-pointers (8-of-19) and 56 percent at the foul line (9-of-16). The Muleriders shot 37 percent from the field (23-of-62), 21 percent on three-pointers (3-of-14) and 61 percent at the foul line (11-of-18).

UAM returns to action this Saturday, January 29 at home against Delta State. Tipoff is set for approximately 4 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
