#14 RIVERHAWKS TOO MUCH FOR BLOSSOMS

Box Score
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM women’s basketball  team fell at home tonight in the opening game of the 5th Annual Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic, 67-54.

Both teams were remarkably consistent throughout the night, unfortunately for the Blossoms that meant consistently cold. UAM (3-3) shot just 28-percent from the field to NSU’s 44-percent.

The game started off slowly for both teams. The game was tied at 12 with 13:10 left in the first half, but then the RiverHawks  (5-0) went on a 7-0 run over the next six minutes and did not trail again. NSU went into halftime up 28-23, thanks to a 9-2 UAM run to close the half.

The Blossoms got no closer than four in the second half as the number 14 team in the nation began to pull away. UAM’s shooting percentage improved from the first half by a full ten percentage points, but by then it was too late to catch up.

Chelsea Johnson led all scorers with 17 points on the night. Candace Virgadamo and Emili Slamons joined her in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Blossoms finished 15-of-53 from the floor and 7-of-20 from three. They shot a respectable 17-of-23 from the foul line.

The 5th Annual Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic concludes tomorrow afternoon as the RiverHawks will face Southern Arkansas at noon before the UA-Fort Smith Lions meet the Blossoms in the 2:30 final game.

UAFS defeated Southern Arkansas in tonight’s first game 85-63.
