LIONS EDGE WEEVILS 74-72

Box Score FORT SMITH, Ark. – UAM tied the game tonight with 20 seconds remaining, but could not complete the comeback this afternoon, falling 74-72 to UAFS on the road.

L.A. Farmer hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 72, but the Lions came down and drew a last-second foul to prevent overtime with the game-winning free throws.

The Weevils (6-2) and Lions (6-3) went back-and-forth all day long. The game had seven lead changes and six ties, with neither team able to gather a lead larger than nine. UAM jumped out early to a 9-3 lead. L.A. Farmer nailed a three off a second chance dish from Ricardo Hall, who had a dunk of his own two plays later, but the six point advantage would be the largest of the game for the Weevils.

Fort Smith surged ahead right before the half to take a nine point lead, 41-32, into halftime, but the Weevils scored the first six points of the second half to all but erase that deficit. They retook the lead, 47-45, with 14:25 remaining and continued to hold on to that lead for much of the next 12 minutes.

Fort Smith eventually retied the score at 68 with 1:53 remaining thanks to a Miha Glavas layup. They took advantage of a UAM turnover on the next possession to gain the lead, 70-68 and pushed their new lead as high as four – thanks to two foul shots – before UAM responded.

A Kori Forge jumper with 1:04 and the two Farmer free throws retied the game at 72, but the Lions hit the winning foul shots with one second remaining to squeak by with the two-point win.

L.A. Farmer led the Weevils with 20 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Kori Forge was right behind with 18 points three rebounds and three steals. Sergio Crowe and Ricardo Hall rounded out UAM’s double-figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. UAFS’s Djordje Stojanovic led all scorers with 22 points.

The Weevils will return home next Saturday as they host Champion Baptist at 4:00 p.m. at Steelman Field House in their final game before the Christmas break.
