CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Weevils got back on the winning track tonight, defeating Delta State 83-62 in Cleveland.
The Statesmen (4-4) led early in the first half after getting off to a 10-3 start to open the game. The Weevils (7-2) never allowed DSU to pull away though, keeping the deficit to under ten points until they caught up mid-way through the period.
A layup from Marqus Moody on a put-back gave UAM their first lead of the game, 17-16, with 11:21 remaining in the first half. From that point, the Statesmen were only able to regain the lead for one possession before the end of the half. With the Weevils up one, 28-29, Lonnie Cottrell split a pair of free throws that sparked an 8-2 run to send UAM into halftime up 38-30.
Two three’s from Kori Forge opened the second half and left the Statesmen trailing for the rest of the game, they got no closer than nine points the rest of the way. L.A. Farmer led all scorers with 25 points. He added six rebounds, five assists, and two steals on the night. Kori Forge was right behind him with 23 points. DSU was led by Marqueys Brown’s 14 points.
The Weevils shot 43-percent on the night, going 24-of-55 from the field. They were 7-of-15 from three-point range and 28-of-42 from the foul line. DSU shot just 37-percent (25-of-67) and went a stunning 0-for-12 from three. They were 12-of-19 from the line. Rebounds were almost even, with the Weevils plus-three, 43-40, including 29 defensive boards.
The win marks the first time that UAM has swept Delta State in a season series (of more than a single game) since the 1954-55 season. The Weevils won the two teams’ first meeting this season 88-57 in Monticello back on November 22.
UAM will remain on the road this Thursday as they travel up to Little Rock to take on the Philander Smith Panthers in a 5:00 p.m. matchup. The Weevils defeated Philander earlier this season, 77-55.
