Men's Basketball By: Brian Ramsey

FARMER'S 32 POINTS NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO ATU

MONTICELLO – Junior LA Farmer exploded for 32 points in a losing effort as the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team could not overcome a 23-point deficit in a 73-65 loss to No. 14 Arkansas Tech on Saturday inside Steelman Field House.

Farmer finished the game 10-of-19 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point range. He finalized his scoring by sinking 9-of-10 shots at the free-throw stripe. It was the Carrollton, Ga. native’s third game this season reaching the 30-point mark.

However, Farmer’s point total was just under half of UAM’s total as a team. Juniors Sergio Crowe and Ricardo Hall each added 11 points. No other UAM scorer had more than five points.

After struggling in the first half, shooting 26 percent from the field, UAM (12-9, 4-5 Gulf South Conference) trailed ATU (18-3, 9-0 GSC) 38-22 at halftime, and allowed the Wonder Boys to take their largest lead of the game of 23 points with 14:15 left in the second half.

The Boll Weevils responded by shooting 61 percent in the second half to trim ATU’s lead under double-digits with 3:22 remaining in regulation following a 12-2 UAM scoring run.

Farmer scored UAM’s final seven points, including three foul shots to cut ATU’s lead to four points with 25 seconds remaining. ATU’s Jeremy Dunbar closed the game with four consecutive made free throws to seal the win and keep the Wonder Boys undefeated in GSC games.

ATU placed three scorers in double-figures, led by Dunbar’s 27 points. Johnie Davis and Matt Haney added 17 and 10 points, respectively.

The Boll Weevils ended the game shooting 42 percent from the field (21-of-50), 29 percent on three-pointers (5-of-17) and 69 percent on foul shots (18-of-26). The Wonder Boys shot 44 percent from the field (24-of-54), 36 percent on three-pointers (8-of-22) and 71 percent on foul shots (17-of-24).

UAM returns to action on Monday, February 14 in Arkadelphia, Ark. against Henderson State in a game originally scheduled for this past Thursday, but was postponed due to inclement weather. Monday’s tipoff is set for approximately 8 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
