WEEVILS BEAT SAU, CLINCH GSC TOURNAMENT BERTH

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team clinched a berth into the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament with a 63-58 win over Southern Arkansas on Thursday in the final home game of the season.

With the program’s eight berth into the GSC Championship Tournament, the Boll Weevils (14-11, 6-7 GSC) will enter the event as the No. 4 seed from the GSC-West and will face GSC-East champion Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round on Friday, March 4 in Southaven, Miss. at the Desoto County Civic Center. Game times have not been announced.

UAM will have a chance to better its record in the regular season finale this Saturday, February 26 in Cleveland, Miss. against Delta State. Tipoff is set for approximately 6 p.m. inside Walter Sillers Coliseum.

In the win over Southern Arkansas (11-14, 2-11 GSC), UAM shot 48 percent from the field (22-of-46), 27 percent on three-pointers (4-of-15) and 68 percent on foul shots (15-of-22).

The Boll Weevils were led in scoring by juniors Ricardo Hall and Sergio Crowe with 14 points each. Junior LA Farmer also reached double-digits with 11 points.

SAU’s Casey Chessier came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points, assisted by David Noble’s 13 points and Channin Harden’s 11 points. The Muleriders finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field (24-of-60), 10 percent on three-pointers (1-of-10) and 53 percent on foul shots (9-of-17).
