WEEVILS FALL TO STATESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Despite making 14 three-pointers, the University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team lost 84-77 to Delta State on Saturday in the regular season finale.

The Boll Weevils (14-12, 6-8 Gulf South Conference) were led in scoring by junior LA Farmer, who connected on 11-of-21 field goals, including his season-high of seven three-pointers, with a pair of free-throws added in for a final total of 31 points, his fourth game of at least 30 points this season. He was aided by 14 points from junior Ricardo Hall, 13 points from junior Sergio Crowe and 11 points from senior Jerrell Boswell.

UAM controlled the majority of the first half, leading by as many as 10 points on two different occasions.  The roles reversed in the second half with the Statesmen (15-12, 9-5 GSC) leading by as much as 11 points with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

The Boll Weevils pulled to within two of the Statesmen with 22 seconds left in the contest following a pair of free-throws by Hall, but the Statesmen closed the contest with five consecutive points on free-throws to seal the victory.

DSU was led by a game-high 33-point effort from Phil Turner off the bench. Arian Maliqi had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Jay Murphy also reached double-digits with 11 points.

The Boll Weevils finished the contest shooting 40 percent from the field (26-of-65), 42 percent on three-pointers (14-of-33) and 58 percent on foul shots (11-of-19). The Statesmen shot 52 percent from the field (27-of-52), 35 percent on three-pointers (9-of-26) and 78 percent on foul shots (21-of-27).

Both UAM and DSU have qualified for next weekend’s conference championship tournament. UAM will enter the event as the No. 4 seed from the GSC-West and will face the GSC-East champion and No. 1 seed Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round on Friday, March 4.
