SLUGGISH SECOND HALF SNAPS WIN-STREAK

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Boll Weevils dropped a 85-95 decision to the home-standing Henderson State Reddies at the Duke Wells Center this evening, breaking a six-game winning streak for UAM.

The Weevils (12-3, 2-1 GAC) opened up the early lead on the Reddies (8-6, 3-1 GAC), getting the game to a ten-point UAM advantage, 16-6, before the first media timeout.  A.J. Calhoun played a major role in the initial surge, scoring six of the Weevils’ 16 off two dunks and a layup before the break. He finished the half with 10 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

The lead held throughout the half, but in a close mirroring of the women’s game that preceded it, the lead never climbed higher than 10. The Reddies continued to battle and cut the lead down to one, 37-36 with 1:41 remaining in the frame, but neither team could get another shot to fall before the halftime buzzer.

The Reddies took their first lead of the night on the first play of the new half off a second-chance jumper from Matt Nicholson, 38-37. They pushed their advantage out to 41-37 before the Weevils could answer, but the momentum shift continued as Henderson extended their lead to seven, 39-46, before Coach Allen Sharpe decided he had seen enough and called his first timeout.

HSU kept up the pressure throughout the rest of the half, riding their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. UAM continued to battle to the end, but were unable to make for the sluggish second half start.

The game was physical from front-to-back with 54 fouls called between the two teams. Both L.A. Farmer and HSU’s Denzel Ensley fouled out before the end. UAM hit 17 of their 32 free throw attempts (53-percent) while the Reddies connected on 23-of-34 for 67-percent.

Sergio Crowe led the Weevil attack with 20 points. L.A. Farmer finished right behind with 19 points , Ricardo Hall added 15, Kori Forge had 11 and A.J. Calhoun finished with the game’s lone double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. HSU was led by Andrew Ensley’s 19 points and eight rebounds.

As a team, UAM shot 47-percent from the floor, going 30-of-63 and they were 8-of-26 from three for 30-percent. Henderson shot 45-percent from the floor, 32-of-71, and 33-percent from three, 8-of-24.

The Weevils will return to action next Thursday as they host the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game at 5:30.
