MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM men’s basketball team staved off a furious last-minute charge by Southwestern Oklahoma tonight, surviving 86-82 in GAC action.
After leading by as many as 14 points in the second half, UAM (13-3, 3-1 GAC) scored the game’s last four points to come away with the victory. SWOSU (9-5, 1-4 GAC) took their first lead of the second half with 2:33 remaining, 77-78. L.A. Farmer responded with a fast drive to the paint to reclaim the lead on the next play and extended the slim lead back to two with 1:24 remaining thanks to the front end of a pair of free throws.
Southwestern came right back and hit a three to go back up 80-81 with 1:09 to play, but that would be their final possession in the driver’s seat. The Weevils would not be denied on the home hardwood and outscored the Bulldogs 6-1 over the remaining time to seal the hard-fought win in front of a raucous crowd inside Steelman Field House.
The Weevils led much of the night thanks to their hot-handed shooting, particularly from the free throw line. The Weevils added 27 points to the board with the clock stopped, hitting 77-percent of their opportunities (27-of-35). They hit 11 more free throws than Southwestern took all night.
That helped offset a good shooting night from the Bulldogs. Southwestern shot better from the floor (57-percent) and from three (60-percent) than did the Weevils. SWOSU hit 31-of-54 from the floor and a blistering 9-of-15 from downtown. UAM was slightly cooler at 50-percent (26-of-52) and 41-percent 7-of-17.
Four Weevils scored in double-figures on the night, with L.A. Farmer posting a game-high 33 points in just under 40 minutes of play. Sergio Crowe put up 21 points in 39 minutes, while Ricardo Hall added 14 and Kori Forge had 13. Southwestern was led by Thomas Davis’ 20 points.
The Weevils will look to maintain their perfect home record again this Saturday as they host the East Central University Tigers at 4:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game at 2:00 p.m.
