WEEVILS HOLD OFF TIGERS FOR 14th WIN

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM Boll Weevils held on for their second-straight game, defeating East Central 75-69 at Steelman Field House.

The Weevils (14-3, 4-1 GAC) capitalized on icy shooting from the Tigers (3-13, 0-6 GAC) in the first half to build up an insurmountable lead. ECU shot just 33-percent from the floor in the half, hitting just 8-of-24, including 2-of-6 from three.  The Tigers hit no field goals for over eight minutes in the middle of the half, allowing the Weevils to go from three up, 11-8, to 14 up, 24-10. The only two points for the Tigers came at the foul line in the stretch.

UAM carried a 21-point lead into the halftime, up 45-24. But the second half was almost entirely Tiger. ECU got tough down low and outscored the Weevils 28-14 in the paint for the half and used a 12-2 offensive rebound tally to score 18 second-chance points.

The furious surge from the Tigers all but erased the halftime deficit, although it took them most of the half to get within their closest point. ECU cut the lead to five, 67-62, with two minutes left in the game. The Weevils did not lose their cool, however, and managed to keep one step ahead of the Tigers the rest of the way, holding on for the 75-69 win.

The Weevils finished the night going 20-of-42 from the floor (47-percent), including 5-of-9 from three (26-percent). They did hit 30-of-39 free throw attempts for 76 percent. ECU hit 25-of-56 from the floor (44-percent), 5-of-13 from three (38-percent), and went 14-of-29 from the line (48-percent).

L.A. Farmer played the full 40 minutes for the Weevils and netted a game-high 22 points and a team high seven rebounds. Ricardo Hall had 14 points and Kori Forge added 13. Caprest Rhone led ECU with 20 points in 38 minutes.

UAM will look to continue their run as they travel to Southern Arkansas on Monday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 in Magnolia.
