MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Boll Weevils shot 54-percent from three in the second half to pull away from the OBU Tigers tonight, 70-56, at Steelman Field House.
The game was close throughout, with neither team able to pull away until late. The Weevils (15-5, 5-3 GAC) rode over 50-percent shooting from three and a strong showing at the foul line to earn their fifth GAC win of the season.
The Tigers (11-7, 4-4 GAC) led by seven, 26-33, with 4:02 remaining in the first half before UAM closed on an 8-0 run to take the one-point edge into the break. A pair of Lonnie Cottrell free throws sparked the run, as a different Weevil stepped up on every possession. Marqus Moody hit a layup to pull within three, a deficit that L.A. Farmer closed on the next trip with a bomb from beyond the arch to tie the score at 33, and A.J. Calhoun hit the back end of two free throws with four seconds remaining in the half to send the Weevils into the locker room up one, 34-33.
The two teams traded runs at the start of the second half, with the Tigers getting as far as eight points ahead before three Kori Forge three pointers in a row regained the halftime one-point lead for UAM with 12:09 remaining to play. They did not trail again.
Similarly to the women’s game that preceded it, the Weevils scored 14 of their final 24 points on the foul line. They got the lead above single-digits with two minutes to play thanks to a pair of L.A. Farmer free throws. The lead got as high as 16 with 33 seconds remaining before settling on the 70-56 final.
The Weevils were led by Kori Forge’s 18 points in 24 minutes, including 12 points from three-pointers. Sergio Crowe and L.A. Farmer also finished in double-figures with 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Weevils out-rebounded the Tigers 33-23 on the night, including 24 defensive rebounds. A.J. Calhoun pulled in a game-high eight boards for the Weevils.
UAM finished the game shooting 47-percent from the floor, 18-of-38, including 10-of-18 threes (55-percent). They hit 24-of-32 free throws on the night, Ouachita shot just 13 all night, hitting six (46-percent).
The Weevils will begin the second half of their conference schedule next Thursday as they host Arkansas Tech at 7:30 p.m.
