NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2012-13 season with a 68-58 setback on the road against the University of New Orleans on Tuesday night at Lakefront Arena.
The Cotton Blossoms (2-1) and Lady Privateers (1-2) exchanged baskets through the game’s first seven minutes before UAM’s Candace Virgadamo sunk three free-throws to give UAM a four-point lead with 13:54 remaining in the first period. UAM held that four point advantage for the next two minutes before UNO used a 11-2 scoring run to take a one-point lead with 7:17 remaining in the first half.
That was the game’s final lead change as UNO outscored UAM 15-6 over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 36-27 lead at the break.
UAM pulled to within four points on a Donlicia James layup at the 16:11 mark of the second half before the Lady Privateers used a 14-0 scoring run to take a 48-34 lead at the 13 minute mark. UNO maintained its double-digit lead until the 2:06 mark when UAM used back-to-back baskets from freshman Jordan Goforth to pull to within eight points.
UAM got back to within five points with 30 seconds remaining following a quick 4-0 run with two free throws from Demetra Howlingwolf and a basket by Goforth.
The Lady Privateers scored the game’s final five points to secure their 10-point victory.
Freshman Donlicia James recorded her third consecutive double-double in the loss with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Howlingwolf and Goforth also reached double-digits for UAM with 10 points each.
As a team, UAM shot 32 percent from the field (21-of-65), 22 percent on three-pointers (2-of-9) and 67 percent on foul shots (14-of-21). UNO shot 39 percent from the field (25-of-64), 26 percent on three-pointers (5-of-19) and 72 percent on foul shots (13-of-18).
UNO’s Keri Thomas led all scorers with 23 points. Mirjam Sipos and Mechele Thomas also reached double-digits in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. UNO’s Mathilde Fogelstrom led all players with 18 rebounds.
The Cotton Blossoms are back in action this Saturday, November 24 on the road against Christian Brothers. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn.
