WEEVILS TAKE FIRST DOUBLEHEADER FROM MCKENDREE

MONTICELLO, Ark. –
The UAM baseball team took both games of today’s doubleheader from the McKendree University Bearcats, 14-2 and 16-4.

The Weevils (6-1) scored 14 runs on 12 hits in game one, scoring four runs in the second, third, and fifth innings before tacking on two more in the sixth. UAM scoring six of the 14 against the Bearcats (0-2) with two outs on the board.

Josh Chism crushed a homerun just to the left of Steelman Field House in the fifth that drove in Wayne Hawkins and Danny Loya. He finished game one with four RBI off three hits to lead the team. Loya was right behind him at three RBI on two hits.

Kenny Marshall got his third win of the season in the start, going five innings giving up no runs on two hits. He struck out four and walked five in 21 batters faced. Jesse Barnes closed out the game allowing two runs on two hits, striking out three in nine batters.

Game two got off to a roaring start as the Weevils put up seven runs in the frame off freshman pitcher Vincent Kiefer. Taylor Eaves got things going with a leadoff walk, then stole second to get into scoring position for Danny Loya. Loya drove him in with a single to right center, stole second and was brought home by Josh Chism’s single to right. Chase Stokes walked with the bases loaded to send Hawkins home. Then Christian Gallegos cleared the bases with a standing triple with two outs in the inning.

Wayne Hawkins got his second homerun of the season on a solo-shot to right in the second inning, and Chase Stokes provided a three-run blast to right center in the third for the Weevil’s third long ball of the day.

Chris Guzman (2-1) got the win in four innings of work in the start. He allowed four runs on four hits with five walks, striking out three in 21 batters faced. Coda Medlin, Sam Cason, and Ryan Reyes each got a single inning each to close out the game, allowing no more Bearcat hits.

The Weevils will host McKendree for another doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon at Weevils Field.
