MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team overcame an early 12-point deficit to knock off 22nd-ranked Angelo State by a final score of 90-81 on Saturday at home and extend the squad's streak to six consecutive victories.
Both teams started the contest making all of their shots until the 16:37 mark of the first half. UAM made three three-pointers during that run, while Angelo State used a pair of dunks and a three-pointer to take a 12-9 lead less than three minutes into the game.
The Rams (10-2) grew their lead to as much as 12 points at the 13:16 mark before the Weevils (8-2) began to chip away. UAM posted a 13-4 run that lasted just over four minutes to take its first lead of three points on a three-pointer from senior Jared Harrison with 5:27 remaining in the first half. That was the first and only lead change of the contest. The Weevils led by as much as seven points in the final five minutes of the opening period.
After trailing 44-40 at halftime, the Rams got to within two points of the Weevils in the first two minutes of the second half before UAM used an 8-2 run to grab a double-digit lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Despite Angelo's 45 percent shooting in the second half, UAM's lead never fell below six points until the final four minutes of the game.
ASU used a three-pointer from Chris Talkington and a jumper from Zach Jones to get the Rams to within four points with 4:06 remaining.
UAM took advantage of a pair of technical fouls assessed to Angelo's bench with four made free throws from senior Jared Harrison to get back on top by 10 points with 3:30 remaining.
Angelo once again pulled to within four points with under a minute to go, but UAM made five out of six free throws in the final 43 seconds to secure the win.
UAM finished the game shooting 46 percent from the field (25-for-54), 63 percent on three-pointers (10-of-16) and 79 percent on free throws (30-for-38). Angelo finished at 52 percent from the field (29-for-56), 44 percent on three-pointers (7-for-16) and 64 percent on foul shots (16-for-25).
Harrison led all scorers with 23 points. Senior Brandon Sims added 17, senior Brandon Wilson had 14 and junior Sharif Hudson had 11. Harrison made a career-high five three-pointers. Hudson connected on three and Sims had two.
Talkington and Kenny Williams led Angelo State with 17 points each. Daniel Skinner added 16.
The Weevils close out the calendar year with an 8-2 record and a six-game winning streak. UAM returns to Great American Conference action at home on January 2 against East Central. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
