ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team held off a late push from Ouachita Baptist in a 63-59 road victory over the Tigers on Tuesday night inside Bill Vining Arena.
After a back-and-forth first 16 minutes of the first half, UAM (12-5, 5-4 Great American Conference) erased a five-point deficit and used an 11-2 scoring run to close out the half to hold a 31-28 advantage at the break.
The limited baskets continued to exchange in the first eight minutes in thesecond half, resulting in a 46-all deadlock with 12:07 remaining. UAM then posted a 11-1 scoring run over the next six minutes to grab a double-digit lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.
With UAM leading 58-48 with 4:40 remaining, OBU (5-10, 2-7 GAC) closed out the game on an 11-4 scoring run to get as close as three points on two different occasions, the last coming with 53.9 seconds left in regulation. Senior Jared Harrison nailed one of two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to finalize the scoring and snap UAM's three-game Great American Conference losing skid.
UAM also snapped its recent streak of struggles from the free-throw line, making 20-of-26 charity shots in Tuesday's win. OBU was limited to 11 free throw attempts, making eight.
From the field, UAM finished at 38 percent (20-for-53). Ouachita shot 45 percent from the field (23-for-51).
Senior Brandon Wilson tied OBU's Michael Delph for the game-high in scoring at 21 points. Wilson also had seven rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots in the win. Senior Dayton Mickens added 17 points and five boards. Junior Kenric McCants turned in his best performance of the season with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Weevils are back in action Thursday night on the road against Southern Arkansas. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center inMagnolia.
