MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team closed out the regular season on a four-game winning streak thanks to a 79-69 Senior Day victory over Ouachita Baptist at home on Saturday.
Saturday's win over Ouachita clinched the third-straight No. 3 seed for the Boll Weevils in the Great American Conference Championship Tournament. The Weevils open the tournament on Thursday, March 6 at noon against No. 6 seed Henderson State at the Bruin Field House in Bartlesville, Okla. UAM swept HSU in the two regular season meetings.
After four lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the first half, the Weevils (19-9, 12-8 GAC) gained the lead for the final time on a three-pointer by junior Sharif Hudson at the eight-minute mark. UAM closed out the first half on a 5-0 run to take an eight-point lead (35-27) at halftime.
Senior Brandon Wilson sank a pair of free throws in the first minute of the second half to give the Weevils a double-digit lead, which was maintained for the next 17 minutes. OBU (9-17, 6-14 GAC) rallied in the final two minutes to cut UAM's lead down to eight points with 44 seconds remaining and again with 14 seconds remaining.
UAM finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field (23-for-51), 39 percent on three-pointers (7-for-18) and 62 percent on foul shots (26-for-42). OBU shot 39 percent from the field (23-for-59), 19 percent on three-pointers (3-for-16) and 67 percent on foul shots (20-for-30).
Wilson and Hudson each had double-doubles for the Weevils. Wilson led all scorers with 23 points and added 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. Hudson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Senior Jared Harrison also reached double digits in scoring with 11 points.
Colt Fason led the Tigers with 22 points.
