@UAMHOOPS FALLS IN EXHIBITION AGAINST ARKANSAS STATE

JONESBORO, Arkansas —
 The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team played its first of three exhibition games of the 2016-17 season on Thursday night in a 76-59 loss to Arkansas State inside the Convocation Center.

Arkansas-Monticello began the first half against the Red Wolves in a tightly contested match-up, as UAM only trailed Arkansas State 20-16 midway through the opening half. ASU finished the first half however going on an 18-9 run to lead the Weevils 42-27. 

A jump shot by junior Cobe Goosby closed the gap against Arkansas State midway through the second half with 8:36 remaining, the Weevils only trailed by nine points at 58-49. The Red Wolves took control for the remainder of the half however, holding a lead of 10 or more points until the final buzzer with ASU winning against UAM, 76-59.

A-State took advantage of key team statistics as ASU out-rebounded Arkansas-Monticello 58-40 and the bench of the Red Wolves outscored the bench of UAM, 36-11. 

Junior Derylton Hill led the UAM offense in the match-up with a double-double as he recorded 20 total points and 11 rebounds. Hill also shot 50 percent from the field going 8-for-16.

Goosby also recorded a double-double debut in his Arkansas-Monticello debut with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and led the Weevils in minutes played with 34. 

The Weevils finished the game shooting 33 percent from the field (21-for-63), 22 percent on three-pointers (4-for-18) and 54 percent on foul shots (13-for-24). A-State ended the night at 39 percent from the field (30-for-76), 27 percent on treys (8-for-30) and 62 percent on foul shots (8-for-13).

UAM will hit the court next on Tuesday, November 8 as the Weevils travel to Little Rock, Arkansas to take on UALR in the second exhibition contest of the 2016-17 season for Arkansas-Monticello, with tip-off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
