SCOUTING THE WEEVILS
The UAM men's basketball team will host Harding University today at Steelman Field House. The Weevils enter this one with a 2-1 record while the Bisons are 3-1. Both of these teams will be playing in their first Great American Conference games of the 2019-20 season.
The Weevils are coming off an offensive explosion in a 109-74 win over Champion Christian College on November 16. UAM had four players tally double-figures in points with
Marcus Gilbert going for a career-high 25.
KJ Lesure added 19, while
Justin Slocum and
Kwame McBean had 16 and 13, respectively.
UAM's early story is that it rarely turns the ball over, snags offensive rebounds and has plenty of scoring balance. The Weevils currently are eighth in Division II men's basketball in turnovers per game at just 9.3. They are also first in the GAC in offensive rebounds per game at 14.0. Currently, they have five players averaging at least 10 points per game in Lesure (16.7), Gilbert (16.7),
Austin Hardy (11.0), McBean (11.0) and Slocum (10.0).
Overall, UAM is shooting 46.5 percent from the floor and 34.6 percent from three-point land. The Weevils are also averaging 41.7 total rebounds per contest and 15.7 assists per game.
Defensively, UAM has forced opponents to turn the ball over 42 times and have 27 steals and seven blocks.
Lesure has averaged 16.7 points this season and is second on the team in assists per game as well at 4.0. The senior has also forced four steals of his own and is 6-for-15 from downtown.
Gilbert continues his stellar play at 16.7 points per game he's also leading the team in assists at 4.3 and averages 7.0 rebounds per contest.
Hardy has been the team's main threat from long range shooting 50.0 percent from three-point territory.

SCOUTING THE BISONS
Harding is off to a pretty solid start thus far in 2019-20 with a 3-1 record. The Bisons are first in the conference in scoring margin of +14.3.
Offensively, Harding has a pair of scorers averaging at least 10.0 points per contest in Romio Harvey and Joel Polius. Harvey has managed to score 27.5 points per contest while Polius has tallied 12.3 points per game.
Polius is also the team's top rebounder averaging 8.8 boards per contest. He also has six blocks and four steals and is shooting a team-best 63.3 percent from the floor.
