Jackson Leads Weevils to Victory over Harding in First Conference Win of the Season

Box Score | SEARCY, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Men's Basketball team traveled to Searcy, Arkansas on Saturday to take on in-state Great American Conference foe Harding University in their third conference match-up of the 2022-23 season. The Weevils came out of their eighth contest of the year with a 77-72 win over the Bisons.

Newcomer Isaac Jackson led the way for Arkansas-Monticello (4-4, 1-2 GAC) for the third straight game. Jackson posted 17 points in the match, going 4-6 on field goals throughout the match. He also went 3-3 on shots from three-point range and 6-8 on free throws with a team leading nine rebounds and five assists contributed on the day.

Edwin Louis and Josh Denton each contributed 16 and 13 points of their own for the Weevils against Harding. Louis went 6-11 on field goals, 1-3 on three-pointers, and 3-4 on shots from the line with five rebounds and three assists. Denton was 5-6 on two-pointers and 3-4 from range, while giving Arkansas-Monticello seven rebounds and three assists.

Mario Fantina and Timur Krupalija were the last two Weevils to score double-digits on the night, posting 11 and 10 each. Fantina put up 4-12 field goals and 3-8 from beyond-the-arc with four assists in the match. Krupalija went 4-6 in the paint and 2-2 from the free throw line with three rebounds and a block.
 
Harding (4-5,0-3 GAC) was led by Taylor Currie with 18 points.

The first half of the match began with two free throws and a layup from Timur Krupalija to give the Weevils a 4-2 lead over Harding, followed by a handful of points to increase the UAM lead. The Weevils would continue to hold onto the lead for the remainder of the opening 20 minutes, shooting for 56% on field goals, hitting 14 out of 25 attempts, as well was 5-12 three-point shots. The Weevils were able to put up 40 points throughout the entirety, leading 40-34 as the two teams would head into the locker room.

The second half opened with the Bisons scoring eleven straight points and regaining control of the match. Arkansas-Monticello would fall behind by a half-high of 10 points before climbing their way back to a 61-60 ball-game with 10 minutes left on the clock. Harding would jump ahead again briefly, but were unable to hold on to the advantage. The match would eventually come out to a close with UAM on top 77-72.

Arkansas-Monticello committed 15 turnovers in the entirety of the match.
