Kevin McCarn came to UAM as an unrecruited walk-on from Mountain View in 1997 and promptly won the starting quarterback job as a freshman. Over the next four seasons, McCarn rewrote both the UAM and state collegiate passing records, passing for a then-state record 7,864 yards.

McCarn, who currently coaches at Hamburg, still holds UAM records for yards passing in a career, career touchdown passes (61) and passing yards in a single game (499 yards vs. Arkansas Tech on October 23, 1999). He finished his UAM career with 563 completions in 1,056 attempts and his 96-yard touchdown pass to Corey Rider vs. Henderson State in 2000 is the longest pass play in UAM history. McCarn threw five touchdown passes in a single game twice.

One of McCarn’s favorite targets was Anthony Giovingo, a third team All-American wide receiver and a 1998 finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, presented annually to the best player in NCAA Division II. Between 1995 and ’98, Giovingo set UAM records for career receptions (187), receptions in a season (81 in 1998), and career receiving yards (2,646). He caught 17 touchdown passes while earning first team All-Gulf South Conference and All-South Region honors in ’98.
